Volunteer LeadershipLeadership service on ICBA committees and councils provides great opportunity for community bankers to have their voices heard while making a difference within the community banking industry.
Our committee members help shape our policy positions by providing us with firsthand banker experience. The time, knowledge, and expertise that our volunteers contribute help us produce effective advocacy, best-in class education, and high-quality products and services.
We work to ensure our committees reflect our membership in asset size, geography, and demographics, with an additional emphasis on ensuring diversity. Almost 230 community bankers from across the nation serve on our 15 committees, subcommittees, and councils. They address a wide range of issues, from bank safety and soundness, to cyber and data security, to community bank products and services. We also have three councils that focus on bank charter types.
ICBA committee terms are for one year, and appointments are made by incoming ICBA chairmen ahead of their year in office. We work closely with our affiliated state community banking associations to identify bankers that are active and engaged in their communities and motivated to serve at the national level.
When community bankers commit to committee service, we rely on them to keep us informed on their state and local community banking issues. They coordinate grassroot activities with other community bankers in their state and often serve as “grass-top” contacts with their members of Congress.
Our committee members typically meet in person twice a year to network with peers, discuss policy issues related to their committee jurisdiction, and visit with congressional offices and regulatory agencies. Committee service is on a volunteer basis, though ICBA reimburses expenses for in-person meetings.
Conference call meetings may also be held throughout the year. ICBA leadership bankers are asked to back our policy positions, support membership recruitment programs, and promote and utilize our products and services when possible.
The work of our committee members is essential to the success of our organization and the community banking industry. They keep us informed and focused so we can achieve ICBA’s mission:
